Angela Meleca Gallery is pleased to present ‘girls in pantyhose‘, a two-person exhibition of new photographs, paintings, sculpture and film by Columbus-based artists Danielle Julian Norton and Melissa Vogley Woods.

Marking the first time either artist has exhibited in the gallery, Julian Norton and Vogley Woods both use their practice to explore feminism, suppression and how belief systems are constructed.

Julian Norton integrates photography, performance and sculpture to question authority and the structure of patriarchy. The work in this exhibition is rooted in how belief systems are constructed, and asks the viewer to consider if objects are what they appear to be. Julian Norton’s sculpture addresses physical transition and understanding from experience vs language.

Vogley Woods’ films exaggerate the form of foot fetish videos found on YouTube to navigate questions of power and equality. By inciting a sexualized space, they push against conventional feminist doctrine portraying a sexuality performance as a feminist gesture. Her paintings explore abstraction as a place for feminist content, drawing on the lineage of previous feminist abstract painters. Vogley Woods is interested in highlighting the erasure of female and marginalized voices as abstract images while conjuring the erotic and resting body. Both paintings and films work together to consider issues of gender, power, shame and policy.

The title girls in pantyhose, comes from the writing of Charles Bukowski: girls in pantyhose [from Love is a Dog from Hell: Poems, 1974-177 (1977), Black Sparrow Press].

Metal Man CD Release Party

King Avenue 5

Saturday

This is it! The big show we’ve been working on for months. Although the CD is available for sale through CD Baby, the band wants everyone to come out and have a great time with Spradling, Carter & Arnold (and Manring and Whitehead) as they celebrate the official release of their first CD with their first public performance as a group.

The band has grown by two in order to accommodate the complexities of the album. They’ll be playing it all! The quiet parts, the introspective movements, heck, they’ll even play the loud stuff. In addition to the five of them, they’ll have even more guest musicians making appearances during the evening.

Ted Spradling: Vocals, bass guitar, bass pedals
Steven Day Carter: Drums, vocals, electronic percussion
Deane Arnold: Vocals, guitar, keyboards
Dave Manring: Electric guitar
Eric Whitehead: Vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards

Doors open: 7:00 p.m.
Tickets: $10 at the door ($7 in advance)
