getcha

Tacocat Cooperative is proud to host the new works of Sharon Dorsey curated by Claire Smith. Please join the cooperative on June 2nd for an opening reception from 6-9pm.
“GETCHASOME!” was the battlecry I declared for myself and those around me at the beginning of 2016. It’s a phrase that we used to say all the time when I was younger, usually in reference to achieving a sexual act somewhere between 2nd base and home plate. This year I’m taking back the phrase to sum up these things:
“TAKE A CHANCE!”
“BE FEARLESS!”
“PUT IT OUT THERE!”
The truth is, you might die before you go to sleep tonight. Or I might die. And wouldn’t it be nice if we had something lovely to leave behind? I present to you my “some”. I challenge you to get yours.
Bring your appetite because Challah Food Truck will be at the opening, serving delicious food all your hungry mouths!

As Larry Doyle states:
Mercury rules communication, clear thinking, truth and travel. I have created this show while Mercury is retrograde. The planet pulling backward in the sky taking with it travel and truth, communication and clear thinking. My works are centered around connecting, dating and searching while all these feel retrograde.
As my little beings are crowned, boxed and tied I hope you can place yourself within their adventures seeking companionship, friendship and truth. Please include us in your story.

ROY G BIV Gallery presents work by Heather Kaplan and Ryan W. Kelly. The work of both artists is on display June 4–25 at 997 N High St. Hours: 1 to 6 pm Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is free.

Heather Kaplan will display clay figurines that explore play and childlike aesthetics. Like figurines and toys, Kaplan’s work begs to be rearranged and played with. Working in low fire clay, Kaplan renders some forms by hand and others through slip casting. She applies many layers of glaze and re-fires her pieces in order to achieve surface patterns and textures. Kaplan’s sculptures explore her interest in childlike aesthetics, particularly the aesthetics of carnivals, festivals and the imagination.

Ryan W. Kelly will turn the gallery into a replica domestic space, complete with painted backdrops, furniture, floor cloths, a faux fireplace and peculiar ceramic tchotchkes. Kelly imagined the installation as the home of a fever-dreaming follower of the Bloomsbury Group (the early 20th century group of writers, artists and intellectuals, notably Virginia Woolf and her sister Vanessa Bell). To decorate the installation, Kelly has created objects that function both as props in the larger tableau and as a portrait of the fictional, idiosyncratic inhabitant.
