Christopher Burk: Urban Threads

Artist Reception, Brandt-Roberts Galleries

Friday September 2nd

5:30-8 p.m.

On view September 2nd through October 2nd
Burk’s recent body of work continues his exploration of the overlooked corners of our city — telephone lines, abandoned houses, and dimly-lit windows take center stage on a backdrop of meticulously painted skies. He documents his surroundings as a pseudo-historical catalog, emphasizing the elements that connect us through a network of information. Though antiquated, these jumbled wires and cables continue to serve as a means to connect us to one another. Christopher uses his visual vocabulary to illuminate the unorthodox beauty of his subjects, depicting them in stunning, reverent detail.

Saturday September 3rd

7-10 p.m.

ROY G BIV Gallery presents work by Dana Lynn Harper and Samantha Parker Salazar. The work of both artists will be on display September 3–24 at 997 N High St. Admission is free.
In Dana Lynn Harper’s installation Loo-Loo Field, hundreds of hand-cut neon vinyl petals suspend in the air to form a cloud-like cluster. As light passes through the petals, their edges reveal bright neon colors. Using overpowering color, inviting textures and playful forms, Harper’s work act as a portal into a new invented world fueled by childhood fantasy. In Samantha Parker Salazar’s installation Wakeby Night, a storm of paper undulates through the gallery, breaking apart and becoming dense, revealing light,  shadow, and subtle color shifts. Like a drawing in space, the installation explores movement in darkness and the sublimity that comes with perceiving depth and density. Thick, velvety blackness percolates in the lines and intricate textures of the installation. Simple materials such as fabric and paper reveal themselves and reach beyond their utilitarian associations, stretching and bending to the will of drawing.
