Fresh A.I.R. Gallery: Opening Reception
Cathy Jeffers, Revealed
Wednesday 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Fresh A.I.R. Gallery cordially invites you to Revealed, an exhibition featuring the narrative quilts of Dayton-based artist Cathy Jeffers.
Please join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Revealed will be on view at the Fresh A.I.R. Gallery from December 7, 2016, through January 13, 2017. Cathy will deliver an artist’s talk on the final day of the exhibition from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Rather than incorporating traditional patterns, Cathy’s quilts reflect personal history and depict images and narratives that she envisions. They serve as a way for her to process life events and decisions, share stories, and allow her to worry less. Her quilts often evolve naturally and take shape with little preparation. Using a raw-edge technique, Cathy layers and combines materials until a pleasing composition, full of contrast, emerges.
Cathy has been quilting since 2005, but discovered the therapeutic value of art during her second hospital stay. Working with fabric is deeply cathartic for her, she says. Cathy writes: “As I have quilted and gradually recovered from my mental illness, I am no longer too afraid to be who I am and share my stories. I often start with the wildest thing I can think of, and then I make an art quilt out of it.”
Cathy has has exhibited her quilts at venues including the Dayton Visual Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio, the 2009 Quilt National in Athens, Ohio, and the Miska Studio Gallery in Washington state.
