Amazing Cat Show Highlight of Franklinton Fridays!

Well, I have been out of town for 3 weeks and have missed some great art happenings in Central Ohio as well as not posting about them sorry to say!  So much to do in my new home and taking advantage of glorious weather and sunshine while in Florida that there just wasn’t enough time!  BUT I’m back at it and want to particularly highlight the Second Annual Amazing Cat Show that will be have it’s opening this Friday and continue to be exhibited throughout the month of January.

This particular show is very special to me because of my love of cats and any rescue that tries to help them.  In this case, Colony Cats will be the recipient of a portion of the sales for this event.  They do so much to catch, neuter and release as well as educate, care for and help kitties throughout the city as well as in the Franklinton area.  So, PLEASE come out and support this worthy cause and get yourself some AMAZING cat themed art!  I have 5 pieces for sale in the show and I know that there is plenty of art to go around!!  Last year, this event raised around $5000 for the cats so let’s see if we can top that!

Revealed: Narrative Quilts by Cathy Jeffers

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery

Artist Talk

Friday 3-4 p.m.

revealedFresh AI.R. Gallery invites you to an informal conversation with Dayton-based fiber artist Cathy Jeffers. Cathy’s vibrant quilts venture away from traditional patterns and are rich in narrative and symbolism. She describes her work as organic in nature, with compositions and ideas that arise naturally through the layering of fabrics. Cathy has always enjoyed making art, but quilts became her main artistic medium in 2005. In 2012, after numerous health issues, she became disabled, and was no longer able to work as an art teacher, as she had done for 35 years. Continuing to create art herself helped give her a reprieve. “My mind and emotions are at peace and in better balance when I am creating,” Cathy says. “Through quilting specifically, I feel as though I am finally revealing my true self.”
Light refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

Second Saturdays

The Vanderelli Room

Saturday 3-6 p.m.

Winter grey getting you down? Starting next Saturday we’ve got a good excuse to get out on a winter weekend afternoon and wash some of those dreary feelings away.

SECOND SATURDAYS WITH SONIKORA is a new arts event featuring jazz, improvised music, and special collaborations between artists of different mediums. It’s equal parts concert experience and art happening.

Sonikora is our regular feature– a Rhodes/bass/drums trio that goes on heavy cosmic flights integrating funk, jazz, world music, and ethereal soundscapes. Fans of Alice Coltrane, Medeski Martin & Wood, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock will appreciate the organic quality and rhythmic vitality of their improvisations. Sonikora is: Chris Haas (analog keyboards), Jason Miles (electric bass/percussion) and Robert White (drums). For next Saturday’s set they will feature a special guest, saxophonist Hasan Abdur-Razzaq.

Also on this bill is a solo set by Tony Zilincik– whose work on the tuba is a sublime, bizarre sound world of its own, and Sun Trash–a fabulous improvised music duo with multi-instrumentalists Caleb Miller and Nick Weckman.

Each Second Saturday will conclude with a unique multi-medium experiment, which will double as an incubator for future sets and collaborations. For this one we will have musicians from the previous sets interacting with movement and visual artists. The intent is for a genuine interchange of ideas and energies, not just a live music set with painters and dancers as cool window dressing. There won’t be any prior discussion, so there will be a level of mystery and tension about how it will all unfold.

Please join us to help give birth to an authentic Columbus art happening! We are inspired by the examples of historic art collectives like the AACM and B.A.G. to present something fresh, vibrant, and real-

1st Second Saturdays with Sonikora
