Starting Tonight…More Shopping, More Art!!!

Still lots going on for shopping and getting you art on before the holidays.  Support Local artisans and support your city’s art scene!!
BUT before you do that….Help save the art programs in Ohio.  Your voice is critical at this time!!
If you want to know about the positive effect of art programs in our local schools, check out a feature from Channel 6 News last featuring my friend and amazing art teacher, Rachel Murdock and her students at Brown Elementary School In Hilliard!
If you want to save the arts and so much more in Ohio Schools, you need to make your voice heard NOW!  Although the School Board states that this will give local districts more say in how they allocate their funds we all know that it will mean the elimination of many art programs, nurses, etc. in the school districts that need them the most!  We can’t go backwards and we need to let the board know that we will NOT sit back and let them take us back to the dark ages in education….too much has already happened in this state to set us back.  PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!
arts rule in schoolsThe state school board just voted 14-5 to take steps toward eliminating the longstanding “5 of 8” rule – a rule requiring schools to have at least five student support personnel from eight categories for every 1,000 students. Those eight are: elementary art, music or physical education teachers, school counselors, library media specialists, school nurses, social workers and “visiting teachers.”The vote (after three hours of debate) isn’t final, though. State law requires two administrative reviews of the change before the board would take its final vote on the change again next year.So – let’s make our voices HEARD before the FINAL BOARD VOTE!

Art teachers (as well as the other seven categories of support personnel) are licensed professionals, experts in their fields with specific, authentic training related to their work. They are essential components of a student’s education and are indispensable – not “extras” or “specials.”

Please send snail-mail to the state Board of Education. Send art, send letters, send tangible items. Communicate the importance of the arts in schools.

Kim Webb’s #holidayhop Opening Reception for her solo show, “ditched” was a great success on December 6th. We hope you’ll join Kim and Sean Christopher Gallery Ohio for an additional Artist Reception during our January 3rd Gallery Hop, 6pm-10pm!

This exhibit continues thru January 31, 2015 during our regular gallery hours ( and visits are always free to the public.

Kimberly M. Webb is Gallery Manager at the Fresh A.I.R. Gallery in downtown Columbus. She received her MFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design (May 2014) and was recently selected for a 2015 Artist Residency in Spain with financial support from the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC). Webb has also agreed to be our February 2015 “Young Hearts 4th Annual Exhibition” Guest Juror, selecting current CCAD BFA & MFA student submissions for this yearly favorite.

“ditched” is a series of sculptural works which are a natural outgrowth of Webb’s MFA thesis research entitled “Consider the Lump.”

[“Consider the Lump is a body of sculptural (de)compositions that regurgitates a daily life that is loud, immediate, fragmented. The work is reactionary in content, form, and process. Value is found through the practice of slowing down to collect what is often disregarded: detritus along the road side, the abandoned table in an alley, the lump of plaster in the bottom of a bucket. These remains are broken down then materials such as resin, epoxy, tar, latex, and mud are pushed and poured to adhere these ruins to create new forms. Inspiration is drawn from chance, the states of things often held together by tension and vulnerability, moments of absurdity. Coming out of a conversation of sculpture from Arte Povera and Dada to Pop and Postmodern, Consider the Lump are siphoned assembled moments.

By collecting I stop a disappearance, I retract the unconcerned detritus and retain something. I find collage/assemblage the quintessential way of reflecting the world. Confronting a chaos with a hodgepodge of fragments from whatever I come across. The remix.”]
